Pink Hoya (Hoya globulosa 'Pink') is a rare climbing and trailing wax flower from the Himalayas, with big rounded heads of pale pink, star shaped, waxy blooms. The long, glossy leaves have gently wavy margins and darker green veins. It grows to about 3m in length but only 20cm across, and suits frost free spots and bright indoor rooms.
Why you'll love it
-
A rarer hoya. Globulosa is much less common than the familiar Hoya carnosa, and the long, wavy edged leaves set it apart even before it flowers.
-
Pale pink flower clusters. Big rounded heads of soft pink stars make a delicate contrast with the glossy, deeply veined leaves.
-
Attractive leaves. The leaves are long and glossy, a little wavy along the margins and picked out with darker veins.
-
Indoors or sheltered outdoors. It suits indoor and conservatory growing in cooler states, or a sheltered position in a subtropical garden.
-
A slim climber. Only 20cm across, it fits narrow corners and baskets.
Where it works best
Hanging baskets. Plant one to a basket in a free draining mix and let the stems trail. Choose a bright spot with filtered light.
Trellis and supports. In a frost free subtropical garden, train it up a trellis in dappled light, spacing plants 50cm apart.
Indoor collections. In cooler states, grow it in a bright room or conservatory alongside other hoyas.
Growing Pink Hoya in Australia
Position and climate. It likes bright or filtered light, indoors or outside. It prefers frost free locations. In the wild hoyas grow in tree branches, so airy, filtered light is right. In far north Queensland the warm winters can reduce flowering. It is a bit fussier than the common carnosa, but the effort pays off.
Soil. Use an open, free draining mix of compost and orchid bark. Hoyas perch high in tree branches in the wild, so the roots want air as well as moisture.
Water and feed. Err on the dry side, particularly in cooler months when growth slows, and water once the surface feels dry. Mist now and then if the air is dry. A cooler winter position seems to help trigger flowers once summer warmth returns.
Pruning. Prune only to tidy long stems, and leave the old flower spurs in place for future blooms.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell this Pink Hoya as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, and this is a slow, steady climber, so expect a season or two of growth before it flowers. The flower colour in photos is for illustration, and your plant's shade may vary slightly.
The tube comes from our grower and is not always in stock. When the grower has none, it shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is it harder to grow than other hoyas?
A little. It rewards the basics done well: bright filtered light, a free draining mix, restraint with water and a cooler winter.
Will my flowers match the photo?
Roughly. The flower colour in the photos is an illustration, and the shade on your plant may vary slightly from pale pink.
Can it live outdoors?
Only in frost free, subtropical conditions with bright, filtered light. In cooler states grow it indoors or in a conservatory.
