Magic Salmon Mossy Saxifrage (Saxifraga x arendsii 'Magic Salmon') is a petite evergreen mat, about 20cm high and 30cm wide, with cup-shaped flowers in pale pink to orange pink. Each bloom opens palest pink and deepens to a warm musk pink as it ages, so a flowering plant carries several tones together. It suits pots, rockeries and shady borders.
Why you'll love it
-
A shifting palette. Flowers change from palest pink to warm musk pink as they open and age, which keeps the display interesting.
-
Soft salmon tones. The pastel pink to orange pink shades blend easily with grey foliage and white flowers.
-
Evergreen mat. Small evergreen leaves form a mounded mat that stays tidy once the flowers finish.
-
Cold hardy. It is extremely cold hardy, so frost is no concern.
-
Tiny and versatile. It fits between pavers, in a rockery, in a window box or among shrubs in a shady border.
Where it works best
Between pavers and in rockeries. Plant 25cm apart along paths and stone edges so the mats link up and soften hard lines.
Window boxes and pots. Compact and mounded, it suits shallow containers. Pair it with white or blue flowered neighbours for a soft spring display.
Shady borders. Tuck it among shrubs, where a patch of pastel colour brightens the ground in spring.
Growing Magic Salmon Mossy Saxifrage in Australia
Position and climate. It grows well in part shade, especially in hot, dry locations, and in full sun in cooler climates with sufficient water. It is extremely cold hardy. Hot, humid tropical climates do not suit it, so it is not for far north Queensland, but south east Queensland and everywhere south are fine.
Soil. Plant in free draining soil and mulch afterwards. Mulch holds moisture and moderates soil temperature while the young plant establishes.
Water and feed. Keep the soil lightly moist while it establishes and during dry spells. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to keep it healthy.
Pruning. It needs no routine pruning. Remove spent flowers and the odd dead patch to keep the mat neat.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Magic Salmon Mossy Saxifrage as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small and needs a few weeks to settle, so plant it out promptly, water it in and keep it mulched.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why do the flowers change colour?
Each flower opens palest pink and warms to a musk pink as it ages, so one plant shows several shades together.
Does it need shade?
Part shade suits it best, especially where summers are hot and dry. In cooler climates it will grow in full sun with enough water.
Will it spread between pavers?
Yes, it is a good plant for the gaps between pavers, forming a mat about 30cm across. Keep it watered while it establishes and avoid heavy foot traffic.
