Hime Meikyou Aeonium (Aeonium tabuliforme 'Hime Meikyou') is a pocket sized succulent, up to 20cm tall and 40cm wide, that forms tightly packed, flat green rosettes of fringed leaves. The name translates as 'princess's mirror', and each rosette does sit like a polished disc edged with eyelashes. It is a compact form of the species, ideal for pots, rockeries and bright rooms indoors.
Why you'll love it
-
Flat, fringed rosettes. Fine hairs fringe every leaf, so each tight green disc has an unusual, delicate outline.
-
It makes plenty of pups. Young plants form around the edge, and the clump becomes tight and layered as it ages.
-
Compact by nature. A smaller form of Aeonium tabuliforme, it suits table tops and small pots.
-
Hardy and drought tolerant. Once established it needs only light watering and two feeds a year.
-
Indoors or out. It works as indoor decor in bright light and as a miniature feature in a rockery.
Where it works best
Shallow bowls and troughs. A wide, shallow dish shows off the flat rosettes at eye level and keeps drainage sharp.
Rockeries and dry corners. Plant 30cm apart in gritty soil, and the pups fill the gaps in time.
Bright rooms indoors. Set it in a brightly lit spot out of direct sun, in a pot with a saucer or cachepot.
Growing Hime Meikyou Aeonium in Australia
Position and climate. A brightly lit position, protected from direct sun, which can burn the leaves. It suits warm temperate, Mediterranean and subtropical gardens, and as it is frost tender it is best kept in a pot and moved under cover where winters are cold.
Soil. Plant in gritty, well drained soil, or a cactus and succulent mix in a pot.
Water and feed. Give small drinks in the growing season, poured around the plant or into the cachepot or saucer rather than over the rosette, so the leaves stay unmarked. Feed as spring begins and again as autumn begins.
Pruning. No routine pruning. A mature plant may send up a long, pale green flowering stem, and the central rosette then dies. The pups carry on, so lift out the spent rosette and let them fill in.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Hime Meikyou Aeonium as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, with the flat rosette still tight, and it pups as it matures, so a single plant becomes a cushion over time.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What happens when it flowers?
A mature plant may send out a long pale green flowering stem, and the central rosette then dies. The pups around it carry on, so the clump continues.
Why water around the plant and not over it?
Wet leaves can mark. Watering at the base, or into the saucer or cachepot, keeps the foliage clean.
Is it a good indoor plant?
Yes, it is a compact form suited to indoor decor. Give it bright light and keep it out of direct sun, which can burn the foliage.
