Green Dome Pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira) is a compact, dense evergreen shrub bred by Ozbreed for hedges and mounds. It grows to as much as 1.8m high and wide, holds clean, deep green leaves and covers itself in white to cream flowers in spring. Clip it into a neat sphere or let it form a natural hedge; it tolerates sun, heat, frost, drought and wind.
Why you'll love it
-
Dense and compact. It builds a tight mound without gaps at the base, so a hedge looks full from the ground up.
-
Handles harsh sites. Ozbreed lists sun, heat, frost, drought and wind as no problem, in well drained or heavy soil.
-
Spring flowers. White to cream flowers open in profusion against the deep green leaves, with the sweet scent this species is known for.
-
Resilient and low maintenance. Ozbreed describes it as resilient to pests and diseases, and its dense growth helps it outcompete weeds.
-
Shapes to suit. It holds a formal sphere or a clipped hedge, and it looks just as right left natural.
Where it works best
Low hedges. Plant 70cm apart in a single row. Ozbreed's range is one to two plants per metre, and 70cm gives a continuous hedge without crowding the base.
Balls and mounds. As a statement planting, set plants 1m apart or more and clip each into a sphere after flowering and again in autumn.
Slopes and green roofs. Ozbreed also lists it for slope stabilisation and green roofs, where tough, low maintenance cover is needed.
Growing Green Dome Pittosporum in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun suits it best. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and parts of Queensland, so it works from subtropical to cool temperate gardens.
Soil. A wide range, including heavy soil. Good drainage still gives the healthiest plants, so avoid sites that stay boggy.
Water and feed. Water weekly through the first summer, then it copes with dry spells. A slow release fertiliser in spring is plenty.
Pruning. Prune no more than one third at a time, in autumn and after spring flowering, for a dense formal look. Prune less often for a natural shape.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?
Plant 70cm apart in a single row. Ozbreed recommends one to two plants per metre, so you can go closer for speed or wider for economy.
How big will it get?
Up to 1.8m high and wide if left alone. Regular clipping keeps it smaller and denser.
When do I prune it?
In autumn and straight after the spring flowers. Never take more than a third in one go.
