Gold Nugget Dwarf Native Frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum 'Gold Nugget') is a compact evergreen Australian native shrub that stays around 75cm tall and 50 to 75cm wide. It carries scented flowers like a frangipani's, opening cream and ageing to rich yellow. The full size tree grows too large for many urban gardens, so this dwarf form suits pots and small spaces.
Why you'll love it
-
Frangipani style flowers on a native. Scented blooms open cream and deepen to rich yellow with age, so each plant carries two tones at once.
-
Genuinely small. Around 75cm tall and no more than about a metre across at best, against the many metres of the tree form.
-
Evergreen shrub. The foliage stays on the plant year round, so it keeps its shape when the flowers are over.
-
Pot and courtyard friendly. It grows well in a container, outdoors or inside, so balconies and courtyards are well covered.
-
Rainforest origins. It comes from the rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland, and responds to rich, well watered soil.
Where it works best
Pots and containers. One plant to a large pot makes a scented feature for a balcony, entry or courtyard, outdoors or in a bright room.
Small gardens. Plant it as a feature shrub in a subtropical or warm temperate bed, with space for 75cm of width.
Low hedging. Where there is room, plant 60cm apart in a single row for a low, flowering hedge about 75cm high. It works best on acreage or a long border.
Growing Gold Nugget Dwarf Native Frangipani in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to a partly shaded position suits it, sheltered from wind and protected from frost. It does best as a focal shrub in subtropical gardens and also suits warm temperate gardens that are frost free or lightly frosted. In cooler districts grow it in a pot that can be moved under cover.
Soil. Rich, well watered soil gives the best growth. In a pot use a quality potting mix that drains freely, and mulch garden plantings.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well, particularly while it establishes. A controlled release feed after flowering gives the best results.
Pruning. Prune once flowering ends to encourage compact growth and a better display next time. Protect young plants from frost.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Gold Nugget Dwarf Native Frangipani as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tube stock is good value for a hedge or for filling several pots, and it grows steadily in rich, well watered soil. Expect a small plant on arrival that needs a season to build up before it flowers well.
Our grower supplies the tube stock, and supply is not always steady. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
