Fuchsia Gum

Fuchsia Gum (Eucalyptus forrestiana) is a small Western Australian gum grown as much for its buds as its flowers. Waxy scarlet lanterns hang along the stems, open to a burst of yellow stamens, then set into hard red gumnuts that persist for months. It stays around 4.5m tall and 3m wide, which makes it one of the few eucalypts that genuinely suits a small garden.

Position and climate. Full sun, always. This is a Mediterranean, warm temperate and arid to semi-arid plant that thrives on a dry summer and dislikes humid, wet summers, so tropical and wet subtropical gardens should choose a different native. It is frost hardy once established.

Soil. Free draining is the one real requirement, and gravelly or sandy ground is ideal. On clay, plant on a raised mound. Keep mulch thin and well clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Water weekly through the first summer to settle it in, then very little. A light application of low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring is enough, and overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

Pruning. Tip prune after flowering to keep the habit dense. It can be run as a multi stemmed shrub or trained to a single trunk for a small tree shape.
