Painted Lady Echeveria (Echeveria 'Painted Lady') is a compact rosette succulent for people who want colour without watering. It settles at about 150mm tall and 200mm across, a blue-green rosette whose leaf edges blush pink to coral in enough sun. In spring it lifts arching stems of orange and yellow bells, and unlike many succulents it is not toxic to cats or dogs.

Why you'll love it

  • It thrives on neglect. Drought tolerant and content in poor soil: a deep drink, then nothing for weeks. Overwatering is the only reliable way to kill it.
  • The colour shifts with the season. Pale blue-green in shade, pink and coral edged in full sun and cool nights.
  • Pet friendly. Not toxic to cats or dogs, worth knowing at floor level or on a balcony the dog uses.
  • Heat is not a problem. It handles a dry inland summer and radiant heat off paving.

Where it works best

Pots and containers. A shallow bowl 200mm to 250mm wide suits a single rosette, and it is happy crowded in with other succulents. Drainage matters more than size.

Rockeries and gravel gardens. Tuck rosettes into pockets between stones where drainage is sharp. For mass planting, set them 200mm to 250mm apart.

Borders and balconies. A low run along a sunny path edge works well, and at under 200mm it never blocks what is behind.

Growing Painted Lady Echeveria in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to very light shade gives the best colour and tightest rosettes. It suits warm temperate, subtropical, Mediterranean and arid gardens. It takes light frost only, so in cold inland and southern districts keep it in a pot you can shift under cover. Constant wet season humidity in the tropics is the other limit.

Soil. Sharp drainage above all else. Use a cactus and succulent mix, or open potting mix with coarse sand and gravel. In the ground, use a raised mound or gravel bed.

Water and feed. Soak it, then wait until the mix is dry right through: roughly every two to three weeks in summer, monthly or less in winter. Water the soil, not the rosette, since water sitting in the centre causes rot. A half strength liquid feed twice in spring is all it needs.

Grooming. Pull away dried lower leaves as they shrivel, and cut the flower stem at the base once the bells finish. Offsets twist off and strike as new plants.

What to expect when it arrives

This one is grown in tubes: a young rosette roughly 40mm to 60mm across, ready for a 150mm pot or a prepared rockery pocket. Expect full size over two to three seasons, offsetting into a small colony.

Succulents travel better than almost any other plant, since the leaves carry their own water. Leave yours dry for a week after unpacking so any handling damage seals over. Delivered Australia wide, delivery from $29.95. Every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How often should I water it?

Only once the mix has dried right through: every two to three weeks in summer, monthly or less in winter. Soft, translucent lower leaves mean too much water.

Why has my rosette stretched and gone pale?

Not enough light, indoors or in shade. Move it into full sun over a week or two so it does not scorch, and new growth tightens. The stretched section never shortens, so behead it and restrike the top.

Is it safe if my dog chews it?

Yes. Echeveria is not toxic to cats or dogs, so it suits a courtyard or balcony where pets have access.
