Double Orange Ornamental Pomegranate (Punica granatum 'Double Orange') is a deciduous, tree sized pomegranate grown for its fully double, vivid orange flowers in late summer. Left unpruned it can reach 6m high and 5m wide, with glossy leaves larger than those of the dwarf form and new growth that opens orange. It is a flowering feature tree, or with pruning, a tall flowering hedge.
Why you'll love it
-
Showy double flowers. Vivid orange blooms packed with petals give strong colour through the flowering season.
-
Orange new growth. Fresh foliage opens orange before turning glossy green, so the plant has colour well beyond the flowers.
-
Tough once settled. It is drought tolerant once established and copes with coastal conditions.
-
Flexible in use. Grow it as a feature tree, a flowering hedge or a large container plant.
-
Responds to pruning. A prune in late winter or early spring encourages flowering the following season and holds the size you want.
Where it works best
Feature tree. Allow 4m to 5m of space if you want it to reach full size, in a sunny position where the flowers can be seen from the house.
Flowering hedge. Plant 1.5m apart and prune each winter to hold it at 2m to 3m. It makes a deciduous hedge that bursts into orange in summer.
Large containers. A big pot of 60cm or more keeps the size in check, and pruning controls the rest.
Coastal gardens. It tolerates coastal conditions, so it can handle exposed positions near the sea.
Growing Double Orange Ornamental Pomegranate in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the most flowers, though it will grow in dappled or part shade. It is deciduous, so expect bare stems in winter. Pomegranates take cool and frosty winters in their stride, and warm summers suit them, so it grows across most of the country outside the wettest tropics.
Soil. Free draining soil rich in organic matter. It will cope with a range of soils as long as they do not stay wet.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well until established and during dry spells. After that it is drought tolerant. A slow release fertiliser in spring supports flowering.
Pruning. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage flowering the following season, and to hold its size.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Double Orange Ornamental Pomegranate as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once planted out, though it takes several seasons to build into a large shrub. Plants travel upright. Plant them soon after they arrive, mulch well and water them in.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will it produce fruit?
It is an ornamental, grown for the flowers rather than fruit. Fully double flowered pomegranates rarely set fruit worth eating.
How big does it get?
Up to 6m high and 5m wide if left unpruned. Annual pruning in late winter keeps it smaller and encourages flowers.
Does it lose its leaves?
Yes, it is deciduous. The leaves turn yellow in autumn before they drop, the stems are bare in winter, and the new leaves come in orange in spring.
