The Cyclone Pruner Floral Snips handle the fine work: cutting flowers for the house, trimming vines, and tidying soft growth on small shrubs. The blades are corrosion resistant steel, tapered and scissor-action, 80mm long on 120mm handles, with the whole tool measuring 190mm end to end and 45mm across. This is the one you reach for when secateurs are too blunt an instrument.

What it does

  • Tapered scissor-action blades. Two blades pass each other like scissors rather than closing onto an anvil, so a soft stem is sliced cleanly instead of crushed. The taper reaches into a crowded plant.
  • Corrosion resistant steel. Steel blades treated to resist corrosion, which matters on a tool that spends its working life in sap and water.
  • Metal base handle lock. A snap lock at the base of the handles holds the blades closed in storage, so nothing catches on them in a tool bag.
  • Polypropylene grips. Light, simple handles. No gear drive, no rotating head, no shock bumper, because none of that helps on cuts this size.

How to use it

Use the base of the blades for anything with substance and the tip for detail. Cut square and just above a leaf node or a bud, so the plant reshoots from a sensible point rather than dying back to one. Do not twist the handles to force a stem through: a scissor action depends on the blades staying in contact along their length, and one wrenched cut can open a gap that never closes.

Wipe the blades between plants if you are working through anything diseased, and clean sap off with a rag before they go away. Snap the handle lock closed and store them dry.

What it suits

Cut flowers and soft stems. Picking blooms, deadheading and taking cuttings, where a clean cut is the difference between a stem that drinks and one that seals over.

Vines, herbs and light shaping. Trimming climbers back off a frame and tidying small shrubs. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.

Not for woody growth. These are made for green stems. Anything thicker than a pencil, or already hardened off, wants bypass secateurs or loppers, and forcing hardwood through a snip blade will spring it.
