Ceylona Baby Panda Bamboo (Pogonatherum paniceum 'Ceylona') is a miniature, bamboo look ornamental grass about 50cm high and 60cm wide. Short, slender, bright green foliage rises on upright, cane-like stems, giving a grove effect at pot and border scale. It is an improved selection of baby panda grass, with fuller leaves and bushier branching.
Why you'll love it
-
Bamboo look, small scale. Cane-like stems and fine foliage give a bamboo effect in a plant under 60cm, with none of a true bamboo's height.
-
Fuller than the species. Compared with baby panda grass it has fatter leaves, a bushier habit and faster growth.
-
A soft, lush texture. Mass planted, the fine green foliage reads like a soft, lawn-like carpet.
-
Tropical and Balinese style. It suits resort style plantings, paired with broad leaves, stone and water.
-
Pool and pot friendly. It works around poolside gardens and in containers, and is small enough for a balcony.
Where it works best
Mass planting and lawn effects. Plant 40cm apart, which is about six plants to the square metre, to build a soft green carpet.
Edging and groundcover. A single row at 40cm gives a fine edge along paths, pool surrounds and garden beds.
Poolside and containers. The fine, tidy foliage makes a low maintenance pool border, and a wide pot on a balcony shows off the cane-like stems.
Balinese and tropical gardens. Use it as the low green layer under taller tropical foliage for a relaxed retreat feel.
Growing Ceylona Baby Panda Bamboo in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It needs protection from frost, so tropical, subtropical and frost free warm temperate gardens suit it, and in cooler regions it is best grown in pots that can be sheltered in winter.
Soil. Good garden soil or potting mix with decent drainage. Work compost into sandy soils to hold moisture.
Water and feed. Water well in dry periods, because these plants prefer plenty of water. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring and a liquid fertiliser at least twice a year to keep the foliage looking fresh.
Pruning. Needs little. Trim off tired or frost damaged foliage in spring, and new growth soon replaces it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ceylona Baby Panda Bamboo as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly and is the economical choice for a large mass planting, while the 140mm pots give you a fuller clump to start with. Plants travel upright, and are best planted out soon after arrival.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
