Blanche White Lavandin Lavender (Lavandula x intermedia 'Blanche') is the good all-rounder in white. This fragrant shrub grows about 70cm tall and wide, with slender grey-green foliage and heaps of white flowers in spring and summer. Lavandins, a hybrid of English and Portuguese lavender, are slightly less cold hardy than English types but carry more flowers.
Why you'll love it
-
Plenty of white flowers. It flowers freely from spring into summer, so the plant is covered in white spikes for weeks.
-
Relaxing fragrance. The scent is rich and soothing, and the foliage releases more when you brush past.
-
Tough and reliable. Lavandin lavenders are more cold tolerant than the Italian and French kinds, and an established plant tolerates frost and temperatures to -10C.
-
Bees and butterflies. The masses of flowers are a feast for pollinators.
-
A manageable size. At 70cm it fits a border, a path edge or a large pot without crowding its neighbours.
Where it works best
Sunny borders. Plant it in drifts at the front of a bed, where the white flowers lift darker foliage and bring pollinators close.
Cottage gardens and hedging. Plant 60cm apart for a low, scented hedge that edges a path, trimmed twice a year.
Rockeries and pots. It does well in gritty rockery pockets and in containers, as long as drainage is sharp and the position is sunny.
Growing Blanche White Lavandin Lavender in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a sunny, north facing spot in full sun. It tolerates lower light with reduced flowering. It is at home in cool, dry climates and tolerates frost once established. In humid regions use a raised bed and a gravel mulch.
Soil. Free draining soil, ideally on the alkaline side, suits it. Avoid wet feet.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for the first 12 weeks, then reduce. Apply a slow release fertiliser once a year after flowering to maintain compact growth.
Pruning. Clip over twice a year, removing only a third of the foliage and avoiding old wood. Pet owners should know that lavender can upset cats and dogs if they eat a lot.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Blanche White Lavandin Lavender as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once planted. Tubes arrive small, and flowering builds as the plant matures over the first seasons. Tube stock is supplied by our grower and is not always available. When the tube shows as sold out the grower has none, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What is a lavandin?
A hybrid between English lavender and Portuguese lavender. Lavandins are slightly less cold hardy than English lavender, but they flower more heavily and are tough, reliable garden plants.
How cold can it get?
An established plant tolerates frost and temperatures down to -10C. That hardiness comes with establishment, so plant in autumn or spring and let the roots settle before the coldest weather.
Is it good for drying?
Yes. The cut flowers dry well for arrangements and potpourri. Cut when the buds are showing colour, and hang bunches in a cool, airy room.
