Appletini Succulent (Sempervivum 'Appletini') is a small, neat houseleek whose pointed rosettes are fresh apple green, with every leaf tip dipped in near-black purple. It grows about 10cm high and 10cm to 20cm wide, and it is rock solid cold hardy and drought tolerant once established. It is an easy-care starter plant for young plant lovers and a no-fuss addition for experienced gardeners.
Why you'll love it
-
Apple green with dark tips. Each pointed leaf is dipped in a deep, almost black purple, a zesty contrast that stays crisp on a small plant.
-
Colour that moves. The shading shifts through the year, so it never looks quite the same in summer and winter.
-
Rock solid cold hardy. Frost does not trouble it, and it is drought tolerant once established.
-
Ever living. Sempervivum means ever living. The rosettes make little offsets, called pups, that grow into a colony.
-
A good first plant. It is easy enough for young plant lovers and forgetful gardeners, and it grows on very little.
Where it works best
Pots and bowls. Pack several rosettes into a shallow bowl of gritty mix for a tidy, modern display, or combine them with other small succulents.
Rockeries and green roofs. Plant 15cm apart. Pups fill the gaps over time, forming a colony of ground-covering rosettes.
Bright windowsills. It can live indoors, but it needs strong light to keep its contrast.
Growing Appletini Succulent in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the best leaf colour and root health. It is cold hardy and drought tolerant, so it suits warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and dry inland gardens. In humid districts with wet summers, grow it in a pot that you can shelter from long spells of rain.
Soil. Free-draining, gritty soil or a cactus and succulent mix. It needs very little soil to get by.
Water and feed. Do not overwater. During summer heatwaves, water around the rosettes rather than into them. Established plants need very little.
Pruning. Gently pull off dead old leaves. If pups form, remove them carefully and pot them on, or leave them in place to build a colony.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Appletini Succulent as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives as a small, neat rosette. Plant it into gritty soil or a pot soon after delivery, water it in lightly and then hold back until the soil has dried.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How do I make more?
Gently remove the pups that form around the main rosette and pot them on, or leave them in place to build a colony.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, on a bright windowsill. It needs strong light to hold its colour, and overwatering is the usual cause of loss.
Will it cope with summer heatwaves?
Yes, if you water around the rosettes rather than into them. Water sitting in the centre in hot weather can cause rot.
