The Fiskars Aluminium Cultivator is a three tine hand cultivator for breaking the crust on a bed, aerating soil around established plants and working compost or fertiliser into the surface. At 300mm end to end, with a cast aluminium head and a SoftGrip handle, it is a one handed tool for beds, raised vegetable gardens and pots rather than something you dig with.

What it does

  • Three aluminium tines, 70mm long. Enough to break compacted surface soil and let water in, without turning the whole bed over.
  • Cast aluminium head. It resists rust and wear, so a damp shed does not pit it the way it does plated steel.
  • SoftGrip handle, 210mm. The grip runs most of the tool's length, spreading the load across the palm on a long session.
  • Rounded edges. Less tearing of surface roots as the tines are drawn through a bed that is already planted.

How to use it

Hold it at a shallow angle and pull towards you in short strokes, letting the tines break the crust rather than driving the head to full depth. The 75mm head works between plants in a row and inside a pot without disturbing the rootball. To feed an established plant, scratch the surface open, spread the fertiliser or compost, then make a second light pass to mix it in and water through.

Rinse the head after use and wipe it dry, then hang it by the hole. Fiskars back it with a 25 year warranty.

What it suits

Use in garden beds. Loosening compacted soil, opening the surface before planting and keeping the top layer aerated around established shrubs.

Use in pots and vegetable gardens. The narrow head suits containers and the close spacing of a vegetable bed, where a full sized fork is unusable. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.

Not for heavy digging. This is a light to medium soil tool. New ground and dry clay take a fork or a mattock, and levering with the tines is how hand tools get bent.
