Liriope ‘Just Right’

Liriope 'Just Right' (Liriope muscari 'Just Right') is the compact border plant to reach for when a bed needs a clean green edge and nothing more asked of you. It forms a tidy tuft about 40cm tall and 40cm wide, throws up purple flower spikes above the foliage in late summer, and holds its shape year round without cutting back. It is also safe around cats and dogs.

Where it works best

Borders and edging. Plant 30cm apart for a continuous border. At that spacing the tufts touch within a season and give a solid green kerb along a path, driveway or garden bed.

Mass planting and groundcover. Use the same 30cm spacing across a bed to cover ground under trees and around shrubs, where its shade tolerance beats most groundcovers.

Pots and small gardens. Three plants fill a 400mm pot, and the compact size suits courtyards, balconies and narrow strips where a bigger strappy plant would swamp the space.

Growing Liriope 'Just Right' in Australia

Position and climate. Partial shade is ideal, though it takes full sun in cooler and coastal gardens and full shade under established trees. It suits tropical, subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens, which is close to the whole country. Frost hardy once established.

Soil. Not fussy. Poor, sandy and clay soils all work provided water does not pool. Improve heavy ground with compost at planting and mulch 50mm deep between the plants.

Water and feed. Water twice a week through the first summer to settle the roots, then it becomes genuinely drought tolerant. A slow release fertiliser in early spring keeps the leaf colour strong.

Pruning. Optional. If a clump looks tired after a hard winter, shear the whole planting to about 10cm in early spring and it reshoots quickly. Otherwise pull out browned leaves by hand.

What to expect when it arrives

It comes in three sizes: tube, 140mm in packs of ten and 200mm in packs of six. Tube stock is the value option for a long border and fills out within two seasons. The 140mm and 200mm plants are established tufts that read as a finished edge much sooner.

Common questions

How many do I need per metre?

At 30cm spacing, allow between three and four plants for every metre of border. A pack of ten covers roughly 3m of edging, which makes the 140mm pack the usual unit for planning.

Is it safe if my dog chews it?

Yes. Liriope is not toxic to cats or dogs, so it is a sound choice for a border a pet walks past or digs beside every day.

Will it grow in deep shade?

It grows well in full shade, including dry shade under established trees. Flowering is lighter there than in a partly sunny position, but the foliage stays dense.

Does it spread and become a problem?

No. This is a clumping liriope, not a running one, so it widens slowly from the crown and stays inside the line you plant it on.
