Rocket (Eruca sativa) gives the fastest return in a vegetable patch: a peppery salad leaf that goes from sowing to first picking in three to four weeks. It is a cut and come again crop, so one sowing keeps producing while you keep picking. This seed packet suits a bed, a raised planter or a single pot on a balcony.
Sow into moist, well drained soil, cover lightly and keep the surface damp until the seedlings are up. Thin them to 15cm to 20cm apart for full sized plants. For baby leaves, leave them closer and sow more seed than seems necessary, because the yield from a dense patch picked young beats a thinned row. It can be sown year round across most of the country, though autumn and spring suit it best, when the flavour stays cleanest and plants are slowest to run to seed. Sow a short row every two to three weeks rather than the whole packet at once, for leaves continuously instead of a glut.
Open vegetable beds. A row alongside slower crops uses ground that would otherwise sit idle, and finishes before the neighbours need the room.
Raised beds and planters. Loose, free draining soil at a comfortable working height gives the quickest and cleanest leaves.
