All Year Round is an open pollinated lettuce (Lactuca sativa) that produces crisp, tender leaves through most of the year in mild climates. It is fast, forgiving and a good crop to start a vegetable patch with, whether you pick baby leaves or grow it on to full heads.
Sow to the depth printed on the packet, into a fine, moist bed or into punnets to transplant later. Space plants 20 to 25cm apart for full heads. Plant tighter and you harvest baby leaves instead, so extra seedlings give more frequent picking from the same ground. Seed can go in year round, but autumn and spring are the best seasons and the most reliable. Sow a short row every few weeks rather than the whole packet at once. Pick outer leaves as you need them and the plant keeps producing, or cut the whole head once it firms up.
Open vegetable beds. A row or two in the veggie patch at 20 to 25cm spacing gives full heads with room to work between them.
Raised beds and containers. Shallow roots mean lettuce does not need depth, so it performs well in pots on a balcony or a raised bed with good drainage. Seed is delivered Australia wide,.
Succession sowing. Small, frequent plantings suit this variety better than one big one, because quality drops once a plant stands too long.
Where it stops. Lettuce is a mild weather crop. Through a hot inland summer or in the tropics it runs to seed and turns bitter quickly, so give those months shade or sow again in autumn.
