Smokey Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare purpurascens) is a bronze leaved form of the familiar culinary fennel, sold here as a seed packet. It reaches 1.5m to 2m with fine feathery foliage in smoky bronze purple, and both leaves and seeds carry a sweet aniseed flavour. It is one of the few herbs that earns a place in an ornamental border rather than the vegetable patch.

What it does

  • Height and movement. At 1.5m to 2m it works as a tall see through vertical, with foliage fine enough that you plant in front of it rather than behind.
  • Edible leaves and seed. Both carry a sweet aniseed flavour, so one plant feeds the kitchen and holds the bed together visually.
  • Feeds beneficial insects. The flat umbrella shaped flower heads are the kind pollinators and predatory insects work over, useful beside a vegetable bed.
  • Low input. It grows strongly without mulching or feeding, and it is drought tolerant once established.

How to use it

Sow at the depth given on the seed packet, into a sunny position with soil that drains. Autumn and spring are the best sowing seasons, though it can go in at other times of year in mild districts. Keep the seedbed damp but not wet until the seedlings are through, then water less often.

Thin or transplant to 40cm to 60cm apart. That spacing lets each plant develop its full feathery shape, and a group of three at the wider end of the range reads as a deliberate drift rather than a row. It needs no mulch and no fertiliser to stay healthy. Pick leaves as you want them, and leave a few flower heads to run on for kitchen seed.

What it suits

Use. Herb gardens and cottage borders, where the bronze colour does more work than a plain green fennel, and mixed ornamental beds needing a tall airy element. It also grows well in a large container with good drainage, given room to develop.

Also worth knowing. It is not a small plant. At 1.5m to 2m it will crowd anything short planted tight against it, so keep it to the back or centre of a bed. Seed is delivered Australia wide,.
