Blue Lake is the climbing bean most Australian home growers start with. It is a heavy cropping selection of Phaseolus vulgaris grown for long, tender, stringless pods, and because it climbs rather than bushes it takes its yield upwards instead of sideways. It suits anyone with a trellis, a tripod of stakes or a sunny fence.

What it does

  • Crops heavily over a long season. Picked regularly it keeps setting new pods rather than stopping after one flush, so a short row feeds a household for weeks.
  • Stringless, tender pods. Blue Lake is grown for eating quality, fresh, steamed or frozen, not only for volume.
  • Climbing habit. The vine runs up any support you give it, which keeps the pods off the soil, makes picking a standing job and turns a narrow bed into a productive one.

How to use it

Sow direct into fertile, well drained soil in full sun, spacing seed 20 to 25cm apart along a trellis, frame or row of stakes. Cover, water in, and have the support standing before you sow. Closer spacing encourages denser growth, so sowing a little extra seed lifts the total yield.

In warm climates seed can go in at any time of year. Everywhere else, spring and summer are the productive sowings. Beans of this type are usually ready to pick 8 to 10 weeks from planting. This variety grows well without mulching or added fertiliser in reasonable soil, so the real work is the picking: harvest every few days and the plant keeps producing.

What it suits

Use in vegetable and raised beds. A single trellised row along the sunny side of a bed carries a full crop without shading the plantings behind it.

Use in large pots. It performs in big containers provided it is given vertical support, which makes it workable on a courtyard or a balcony.

Not a cold season crop, and not one for an unsupported bed. It wants warmth, and it will not run without something to climb. Seed is delivered Australia wide, and packets travel easily alongside plants, so they slot neatly into a larger garden order.
