Cauliflower 'All Year Round' (Brassica oleracea botrytis) is the dependable white cauliflower for a home vegetable patch, forming firm, dense curds across most of the growing year. One plant returns a substantial harvest for the room it takes.

What it does

  • Crops across multiple seasons. It is bred for extended seasonal performance, so in suitable climates it produces outside the narrow winter window most cauliflowers are held to.
  • Firm, compact heads. It develops dense white curds with good texture rather than the loose, open heads that come off a stressed plant.
  • Genuine kitchen range. Roasting, steaming, baking and curries all suit it, so a full head does not go to waste.
  • Grows without extras. It stays productive without mulching or fertiliser, provided the soil it goes into is fertile and drains.

How to use it

Plant into fertile, well drained soil in a position with good sun, spacing plants 45cm to 60cm apart. That spacing is not padding: a cauliflower builds a wide frame of leaves before it makes a curd, and crowded plants make small heads. Wider spacing within that range produces larger curds, so if you have the room, use it.

It can be planted year round, with autumn and spring the strongest seasons. Allow roughly 12 to 16 weeks from planting to harvest, and cut when the head is firm, white and compact, before the curd begins to loosen. Leaving it a week too long costs you the texture. Plant a few at a time rather than the whole packet together.

What it suits

In the ground. Open vegetable beds with good sun and soil improved before planting. This is the classic position and it gives the largest heads.

Soil you can control. Raised garden beds, where drainage and soil quality are under your control and the plants are easy to watch.

Staggered planting. Seasonal food gardens run on succession planting. It is not a small balcony pot crop: at 45cm to 60cm spacing each plant needs real ground to work with. Seed is delivered Australia wide,.
