All Seasons is the carrot to grow if you want carrots more than once a year. It is a dependable, widely adapted variety of Daucus carota that produces sweet, crisp, straight roots, germinates reliably, and can go in across most of the year rather than in one narrow window.
What it does
-
Crops across the seasons. It grows well over a wide range of conditions, so the same packet serves an autumn sowing and a spring one.
-
Straight, uniform roots. Well formed roots that pull clean, given soil loose enough to let them run down.
-
Sweet and crisp. Good raw, cooked or juiced, which matters in a crop you will grow again and again.
-
Reliable germination. Consistent strike, so the row comes up evenly and thinning is simple rather than a rescue.
How to use it
Sow at the depth marked on the packet into loose, stone free soil. Carrot seed is fine and shallow sown, so keep the surface damp until the seedlings show rather than letting it crust over. Thin the seedlings to 5cm to 8cm apart once they are big enough to handle, which is what gives each root the room to form properly.
Allow roughly 10 to 14 weeks from sowing to harvest. It can be sown year round, and autumn and spring are the best seasons for it. Sow a short row every few weeks instead of one long row and you will pull carrots continuously rather than facing a glut. Thin closer than 5cm for baby carrots; left at full spacing they mature to full size.
What it suits
Use. Vegetable beds with loose, stone free soil. Stones and hard clods are what fork a carrot, so bed preparation matters more here than anything you do later.
Also use. Raised beds, the easiest way to get that depth of loose soil, and deep pots, provided there is real depth below the roots. Seed is delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
Not for. Shallow trays or heavy, compacted ground. A carrot grows only as straight as the soil allows, and no care afterwards fixes a root that met a stone in week two.
