Green Sprouting Calabrese is the standard home garden broccoli and the sensible place to start. Brassica oleracea var. italica 'Green Sprouting Calabrese' forms a good central head, then follows it with a run of side shoots once that head is cut. It is a reliable variety for open and raised beds, supplied as a seed packet.

What it does

  • Head first, then shoots. One planting gives a proper central head, then weeks of smaller side shoots, so the harvest is spread rather than concentrated.
  • Tender florets. The heads hold together for steaming and stir frying, and stay tender when picked at the right point.
  • Consistent across conditions. It performs across a wide range of soils and seasons, which is why it remains the default home garden variety.
  • Low input. It grows well without mulching or fertilising, so a bed needs no managing beyond water and picking.

How to use it

Plant into fertile, well drained soil in full sun, spacing plants 40 to 50cm apart. Closer planting produces more compact plants, so extra seedlings within that range lift overall yield off the same bed. Sow in short successions if you want the harvest spread further.

It can be planted year round in much of the country, though autumn and spring give the best results. The first cut is usually ready 10 to 14 weeks from planting. Harvest while the head is tight and deep green, before the buds open, because once they loosen the texture and flavour drop away. Keep cutting side shoots to hold the plant in production.

What it suits

Vegetable and raised beds. Vegetable beds and raised beds through the cooler half of the year. Free drainage keeps the roots healthy and the plants standing upright as the heads fill.

Winter and spring rotation. A staple winter and spring crop in a rotation, planted alongside other brassicas and leafy greens. Seed is delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.

Not for. Shallow containers or a shaded corner. Broccoli needs room, sun and steady moisture, and a plant short of any of the three runs to flower instead of forming a head.
