Blue Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) is a fast growing tropical climber grown for its deep blue flowers, which are edible and widely used for teas, desserts and natural colouring. It climbs quickly onto a fence, trellis or arch and asks very little once it is away. Sold as a seed packet, it is a warm season plant giving colour and a crop from one vine.
Sow in spring or summer, once the soil has warmed. In warm and tropical gardens seed can go in year round, though spring and summer sowings are strongest. Sow at the depth marked on the packet, keep the bed moist while the seedlings come up, then space plants 30 to 40cm apart along the support. Closer spacing closes the gaps faster, so sow a few extra for quick cover. Give it something to climb from the start: a trellis, wires or a fence.
Fences, trellises and arches. This is the job it does best, climbing and flowering as it goes for decorative screening rather than solid privacy.
Pots and edible gardens. It grows well in a container when trained upward, which suits a courtyard or balcony, and in an edible garden it earns its place twice. Seed is delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
What it is not. It wants heat, so cooler southern gardens should wait for warm soil in late spring and expect a shorter run. Nor does it hold itself up: without a trellis or fence you will not get the cover you want.
