Detroit is the beetroot most Australian home gardeners start with and keep coming back to. Beta vulgaris 'Detroit' produces round, smooth skinned bulbs with deep red flesh and a sweet, clean earthiness. It is a high yielding, forgiving variety that suits open beds, raised beds and deep containers, sold here as a seed packet.

What it does

  • Uniform round bulbs. Detroit sizes evenly along a row, so a sowing comes ready together rather than giving one good beet and five stragglers.
  • Colour that survives the pot. The flesh is deep red right through and holds that colour when roasted, boiled or preserved.
  • Two crops from one sowing. The tops are edible. Pick young leaves as baby greens while the bulbs are still filling.
  • Genuinely low input. It crops consistently across a wide range of conditions without mulching or fertilising.

How to use it

Sow direct into loose, well drained soil that has been forked over and cleared of stones, because anything solid in the path of the root gives you a forked beet. Space plants 10 to 15cm apart. Sowing tighter is a tactic rather than a mistake: thin as the row fills and eat the thinnings as baby beets, which lifts the total yield off the bed.

Detroit can go in year round through most of the country, though autumn and spring are the strongest windows. Sow a short row at a time rather than the whole packet, and you will pull beetroot steadily instead of facing forty at once. Bulbs are usually ready 8 to 10 weeks from planting, at any size from golf ball upwards.

What it suits

Open and raised beds. Open vegetable beds and raised beds. Loose soil and free drainage give the cleanest, most evenly shaped bulbs, and a raised bed is the easiest place to get it right.

Balcony containers. Deep pots and containers. Beetroot crops well on a balcony provided the container is deep enough for the root to run and the mix drains freely.

Not for. Heavy, compacted or stony ground left untreated, where roots fork and stall. Seed is delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
