TRISTANIOPSIS laurina (Water Gum)

Water Gum (Tristaniopsis laurina) is the tree landscapers reach for when a job has to look good and stay out of trouble. In a garden it settles at about 8m tall and 5m wide, with a neat rounded canopy, smooth mottled bark and yellow flowers through early summer. Its roots are non-invasive, so it can go near paving, pipes and pools, and this ex ground specimen arrives at 6m with the height already made.

Poolside and paved courtyards. Salt tolerant, evergreen and non-invasive at the root, so it is one of the safer trees to plant near a pool shell or a paved edge.

Shade and screening. A single tree throws real shade over a seating area, and a row screens a boundary at first floor height.

Growing Water Gum in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the densest canopy, and part shade is accepted. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and cool temperate gardens, and it is genuinely frost hardy once established.

Soil. Not fussy. It grows on creek banks in the wild, so heavy ground that stays damp is fine, and it still performs on drier soils with compost worked through the bed.

Water and feed. Deep soak weekly for the first two summers, then only in long dry spells. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring keeps the leaf colour strong on poorer soils.

Pruning. Little is needed. Lift the lower limbs for clearance over a driveway, and trim after flowering if you want a tighter dome.

What to expect when it arrives

This one is sold in a single size, an ex ground tree at 6m. It has been field grown in open soil, root pruned and basketed, then treated with Vitamin B1 and seaweed extract to reduce transplant shock. Field grown stock of this age carries a stronger trunk and better branch structure than a potted tree of the same height.

How far apart should I plant water gums?

Three metres apart for an avenue or a screen. For individual shade trees on a lawn, stretch that to 5m or 6m so each canopy can spread to its full width.

Is it safe to plant near a pool or paving?
