STENOCARPUS sinuatus (Firewheel Tree)

The Firewheel Tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus) is an Australian rainforest tree grown above all for its scarlet flowers, held in spokes along the branches from late summer into autumn. In a garden it reaches about 8m tall and 4m wide over ten to fifteen years, upright and narrow rather than spreading, so it fits a front yard that could not take a fig. This is ex ground stock, dug from the field at 5m to 5.5m.

Screening and shade. At 3m spacing it forms a tall screen that blocks a two storey outlook rather than a fence line, and a mature tree throws useful dappled shade.

Growing the Firewheel Tree in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering, with shelter from hot dry wind while young. It is a tree for tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. It takes light frost only, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and frosty southern gardens are not suitable.

Soil. Deep, free draining soil with organic matter suits it best, reflecting its rainforest origins. On clay, mound the planting position and improve a wide area. Mulch 75mm deep and keep it clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Water deeply and regularly for the first two summers, since an ex ground tree is rebuilding its root system. A native fertiliser low in phosphorus in early spring is enough; overfeeding gives leaf at the expense of flower.

Pruning. Very little is needed. Remove crossing branches and lift the lower limbs over a few years for a clean trunk. Hard pruning delays flowering, which is already slow to start.

What to expect when it arrives

This is field grown stock supplied at 5m to 5.5m, so you receive a semi mature tree rather than a young plant. Ex ground trees are lifted with a root ball and typically drop some leaf and pause for a season while roots re establish. That is normal. Staking for the first year and steady water through two summers make the difference.
