Silver Birch

Silver Birch (Betula pendula 'Alba') is the tree to plant for white trunks and golden autumn foliage in a cool climate garden. It grows to around 10m tall and only 4m wide, with fine weeping branchlets that move in the slightest breeze and cast light, dappled shade rather than heavy gloom. The narrow habit and pale bark make it one of the few large trees that still suits a suburban front garden.

Where it works best

Feature planting. A single birch, or a group of three at 2m spacing, reads as a grove and lets the white trunks work against a dark hedge or wall.

Driveways and avenues. Spaced 4m to 5m apart the canopies form a light tunnel without closing over the drive or dropping heavy limbs.

Shade tree for a small block. The shade is filtered rather than dense, so lawn, bulbs and shade tolerant groundcovers still grow underneath.

Growing silver birch in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun in a cool temperate or warm temperate garden. This is the honest limit of the tree: it is at home in Victoria, Tasmania, the tablelands, Adelaide and Canberra, and it struggles through hot humid summers, so subtropical and tropical gardens should choose something else.

Soil. Not fussy. It grows in poor and compacted soils and tolerates ground that stays wet longer than most trees accept, though not permanent water.

Water and feed. Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, since young birches dry out quickly. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring is enough. Mulch 75mm deep and keep it clear of the trunk.

Pruning. Very little. Remove crossing or damaged branches in late summer or autumn, never in late winter or early spring when the sap is rising and cuts bleed heavily.

Common questions

Will it grow in Brisbane or Sydney?

Sydney gardens in cooler, elevated suburbs can succeed, but Brisbane and anywhere further north is too warm and humid. The tree survives and looks thin and short lived rather than performing.

How far apart should I plant a group?

Two metres apart for a grove effect with overlapping trunks, or 4m to 5m along a driveway where each tree needs its own canopy.

Are the roots a problem near paving?

Birch roots run close to the surface and spread wider than the canopy, so allow 2m to 3m of clearance from paths, paving and garden beds you plan to dig.
