Silver Birch

Silver Birch (Betula pendula) gives dappled light rather than deep shade. It reaches about 10m tall and 4m wide, with chalk white bark and fine weeping branch tips that move in the slightest breeze. Leaves turn clear gold before dropping in autumn, and the bare trunks then carry the garden through winter. Fast growing and frost hardy, it is one of the easiest feature trees for cool and temperate gardens.

Growing Silver Birch in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to light shade in an open spot. This is a cool temperate and warm temperate tree, at home in southern gardens, the tablelands and the highlands. It struggles in hot dry inland districts and in the subtropics, where heat and humidity thin the canopy and shorten its life.

Soil. Deep, moisture retentive ground suits it best, and it copes with heavy or damp soil better than most ornamental trees. Keep 75mm of mulch over the root zone, clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Not a drought tree. Deep soak twice a week through the first two summers, then keep the water up in heatwaves for life, because dry stress shows as scorched leaf edges. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring is enough.

Pruning. Little is needed beyond removing crossing limbs and lifting the lower branches. Timing matters most: birches bleed sap heavily if cut in late winter or early spring, so prune in mid to late summer.

What to expect when it arrives

Common questions

When does the bark turn white?

Young trees carry coppery brown bark that whitens from the base upwards, usually from the third or fourth year. Advanced stock arrives further along that process, which is one reason people step up in size.

How far apart should I plant a birch grove?

Two metres apart. At that spacing the crowns overlap into one canopy and the trunks read as a group, which is the point of a grove rather than a row of separate trees.

Will it grow in a subtropical garden?

Not well. It needs cool winters and dislikes hot humid summers, so warmer gardens give short lived, thin canopied trees. Choose something suited to your climate instead.
