Musashino Zelkova (Zelkova serrata 'Musashino') is the deciduous shade tree for a block with height to give and no width to spare. It reaches about 9m tall and only 3m across, a tight upright vase of branches rather than the broad umbrella a standard zelkova throws. The serrated leaves colour through yellow and burnt orange in autumn, then drop to let winter sun back into the house.

Why you'll love it

  • Tall and narrow by nature. At roughly 9m by 3m it lines a driveway where a full sized zelkova would want three times the room.
  • Autumn colour worth planning around. The canopy turns yellow through orange before leaf drop, strongest where nights get genuinely cold.
  • Genuinely tough. Frost hardy, drought tolerant, heat tolerant and wind tolerant once established, so an exposed nature strip does not faze it.
  • Shade in summer, light in winter. Being deciduous, it cools a courtyard in January and hands the sun back in July, which no evergreen can do.

Where it works best

Driveways and avenues. Space trees 3m to 4m apart. That matches the mature 3m width, so the crowns meet overhead while the trunks stay clear of vehicles.

Small gardens and courtyards. The footprint is the point: one tree gives a two storey house a scaled canopy without taking the whole garden bed.

Feature and shade planting. The upright branching suits a lawn specimen, or a matched pair either side of an entry.

Position and climate. Full sun keeps the form even and the autumn colour clean. This is a tree for cool temperate, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens, which give it the winter chill it wants. Warm humid coastal districts sit outside its range.

Soil. Not fussy about type, but it wants drainage. On heavy clay plant slightly proud so the crown never sits wet, and work compost through the backfill. Keep 75mm of mulch over the roots, clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Deep soak weekly through the first two summers rather than sprinkling daily, which is what sends roots down. After that it carries dry spells well. A complete slow release fertiliser at bud break is enough for the year.

Pruning. Very little is needed. Prune in winter while it is bare, removing crossing branches and lifting the lowest limbs for clearance. Never top it: the columnar shape comes from the leader.

What to expect when it arrives

It is sold as advanced stock in 45L and 100L containers, so you are buying a tree that already shows the upright habit and a clear leader. The 100L gives noticeably more height on day one.

If it ships between late autumn and early spring it will arrive bare of leaves. That is dormancy, not a fault. Expect the first season to go into roots, with real extension growth from the second spring. Delivered Australia wide, advanced and large stock is freighted at cost, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery and a 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant an avenue?

Allow 3m to 4m between trunks. Closer than 3m and the crowns compete and thin from the inside; wider than 4m and the avenue never closes overhead.

Will it really stay narrow?

Yes, the columnar habit is genetic, not something you clip in. Expect about 3m of spread at maturity, and resist heavy pruning, which pushes it wider and bushier.

Can I plant it close to paving or pipes?

We do not list this tree as having non-invasive roots, so treat it as a normal shade tree and leave a couple of metres between trunk and any paving or service line.

Will it colour well in a mild garden?

It colours best where autumn nights turn cold. In milder warm temperate gardens you still get yellow, later and for a shorter run.
