Liriope 'Amethyst' (Liriope muscari 'Amethyst') is the strappy clumping perennial for places where grass will not grow and a bed still needs a clean edge. It forms an even mound about 40cm each way, holds deep green foliage all year, and sends up spikes of purple flowers through the warmer months. It is one of the few edging plants that genuinely performs in dry shade under established trees.

Why you'll love it

  • It works in shade. Dry shade under trees and along south facing walls defeats most border plants. This one holds its colour and still flowers there.
  • A predictable, even line. Every clump reaches roughly the same 40cm dome, so a row planted at the same time stays level without trimming.
  • Purple flowers, not just foliage. Upright spikes of small purple flowers sit clear of the leaves and last for weeks.
  • Genuinely tough, and close to no maintenance. Frost hardy, drought tolerant, salt tolerant and content in poor soil, with one cut back every couple of years the whole job.

Where it works best

Borders and edging. Plant 30cm apart for a continuous edge. The clumps meet within a season and give a soft green line along a path that never needs mowing.

Mass planting and groundcover. Set at 30cm centres in a staggered grid it covers a bed completely and suppresses weeds, the standard fix for dry ground under a mature tree.

Pots and rockeries. A 300mm pot suits a single clump, and in a rockery it softens stone edges while coping with reflected heat.

Position and climate. Full shade to part sun is the sweet spot. It tolerates full sun in cooler southern gardens, though in subtropical and hot inland positions the leaf tips bleach without afternoon shade. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean climates.

Soil. Not fussy. Poor soil, sand and clay all work provided drainage is reasonable, and compost through the bed speeds up the spread. Mulch 50mm deep between clumps until they close over.

Water and feed. Water twice a week for the first two months, then only in dry spells. A light controlled release fertiliser in early spring is enough, and overfeeding produces floppy leaves.

Pruning. Every two or three years, shear the whole clump back to about 10cm in late winter before new growth starts. It looks brutal for a fortnight, then comes back fresh. Divide congested clumps at the same time.

What to expect when it arrives

Three sizes are grown: a single tube, 140mm in a pack of 10 and 200mm in a pack of 6. Tubes are small divisions that take a full season to make a recognisable clump, which is fine for a large area on a budget. The 140mm packs are the usual choice for edging a path, while 200mm plants arrive as established clumps that read as a finished border almost immediately.

Liriope travels better than most perennials because the leaves are firm and the crowns are tough. Flattened foliage on arrival is normal and lifts within a week. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery, and every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it for an edge?

Thirty centimetres apart in a single row. The clumps knit into a continuous line within a season, and it stays even because every plant reaches the same size.

Will it grow in full shade?

Yes, including dry shade under established trees, which is where it earns its keep. Flowering is lighter in deep shade than in part sun, but the foliage stays dense and green.

Does it spread and become a problem?

No. This is a clumping liriope rather than a running one, so it widens slowly from the crown and stays where you put it. Divide every few years if you want more plants.
