Lemon Daze Grevillea Standard is a dense ball of fine native foliage grafted onto a clean single stem. The graft sets the height at about 1.8m and the head fills out to roughly 1.2m across, giving structure and flower at eye level in a very small footprint. Grevillea 'Lemon Daze' carries clusters of yellow flowers over a long season, and honeyeaters find it within weeks of planting.

Why you'll love it

  • Formal shape with almost no clipping. The head builds a naturally rounded outline, so one light trim after the main flush is usually all it asks.
  • Yellow flowers over a long season. Flowering runs through the warmer months and often beyond, which keeps nectar feeding birds in the garden.
  • Tough where feature plants usually fail. Drought tolerant, content in poor soil, and salt tolerant enough for an exposed coastal front garden.
  • Built for small spaces. A 1.2m spread suits courtyards, balconies, narrow beds and large pots without crowding anything beside it.

Where it works best

Pots and courtyards. Use a pot 500mm or wider with a free draining mix. Keep it out of the worst wind, because a standard head catches air like a sail and the stem is the weak point.

Feature and entry planting. A matched pair either side of a door or gate is the classic use. Underplant with something low, since the stem stays bare by design.

Driveways and small gardens. Spaced 1.5m apart along a drive they read as a rhythm of gold heads at eye height without blocking sight lines.

Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and arid gardens. It takes light frost only, so in cold districts grow it in a pot you can move under cover. Constant tropical humidity is the one climate it does not enjoy.

Soil. Sharp drainage matters more than fertility. On clay, plant on a raised mound or in a pot rather than fighting the soil. Mulch lightly and keep it off the stem.

Water and feed. Water weekly through the first summer, then only in long dry spells. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser once a year after flowering. Standard garden fertiliser can damage the roots.

Pruning. Trim the head lightly after the main flush to keep it tight. Rub off any shoots that appear on the stem below the graft as soon as you see them, because rootstock growth will overtake the top if left.

What to expect when it arrives

It comes in two sizes: tube stock and an established 300mm pot. The 300mm plant is the one to choose if you want the shape working straight away. Tube stock is the value option and takes a few seasons to build a comparable head.

Plants travel upright and some flower drop in transit is normal. Stake the stem for the first year or two until the graft union thickens. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

Will it stay at 1.8m?

Yes. The stem is grafted at a fixed height and does not extend, so the plant only grows outward from the head. That makes it one of the few flowering natives you can plant under a window and forget about.

Can I keep it in a pot long term?

It is one of the better natives for containers. Use at least a 500mm pot, a free draining native mix, and refresh the top few centimetres of mix each spring.

Do the flowers attract birds?

Yes, honeyeaters and lorikeets work the blooms through the flowering season. A standard puts that activity at head height, which is worth thinking about right beside a doorway.
