El Miradores Gold Agave

El Miradores Gold Agave (Agave 'El Miradores Gold') is a gold margined rosette that settles at about 1m tall and 1.2m across, holding its form without pruning, staking or watering once established. The broad blue green leaves carry a clean yellow edge that stays bright year round. Drought tolerant, heat tolerant, salt tolerant and content in poor soil, it earns its place in the hardest, driest corner of a garden.

Growing El Miradores Gold Agave in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun, all day. It suits warm temperate, subtropical, Mediterranean and arid gardens. It handles light frost only, so hard frosting inland and cold southern districts need it potted, or against a warm north facing wall.

Soil. Drainage is the whole game. Sandy, gravelly or rocky soil is ideal. On clay, build a raised mound with coarse sand and gravel, and use gravel rather than organic mulch so the rosette base stays dry.

Water and feed. Water fortnightly through the first summer to settle the roots, then leave it to the rain in most districts. Feeding is unnecessary, and rich soil makes soft, floppy leaves that spoil the shape.

Handling and safety. The leaf tips are sharp and the sap irritates skin, so wear gloves and long sleeves when planting or removing offsets, and keep it clear of paths and doorways. This is not a plant to treat as pet friendly.
