CUPANIOPSIS anacardioides (Tuckeroo)

Coastal gardens and poolside. Salt tolerance and tidy roots make it one of the safer large trees to plant near a pool shell or paving.

Growing tuckeroo in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun. It belongs in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens, and tolerates light frost only, so cold inland and southern districts should choose something hardier.

Soil. Tolerant of poor and sandy ground, including coastal sand, provided it drains. Dig the pit at least twice the width of the root ball, backfill with the native soil rather than pure compost, and mulch 100mm deep clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Advanced stock needs committed watering. Deep soak two or three times a week for the first two summers, tapering only once new growth is clearly away, and a complete slow release fertiliser each spring.

Pruning and support. Stake a newly planted ex ground tree for its first 12 to 18 months. Lift the lower limbs gradually if you want clearance beneath, and otherwise leave the natural crown alone.

What to expect when it arrives

These are field grown trees supplied at 4m to 4.5m, 5m, 5.5m to 6m and 7m to 8m. They are dug with a root ball, wrapped or hessian bagged, and are heavy: assume machinery access and, on most sites, a crane or hiab to place the tree. Have the hole prepared and water on hand before it lands.

Expect a genuine establishment period. A dug tree loses part of its root system, so plan on a season of little growth, some leaf drop, and full recovery over one to two years with consistent water. Common questions

What does ex ground actually mean?

The tree has been grown in a field rather than a pot, then dug with a root ball when ordered. You get far more size for the money, in exchange for a longer establishment period and heavier handling.

Will I need machinery to plant it?

Almost certainly. Even the smallest size here is a multi tonne root ball, so plan on machinery access to the planting position and lifting gear on site.

When is the best time to plant?

The cooler months are kinder to a freshly dug tree, since lower temperatures reduce the water demand while the roots recover. Summer planting works if you commit to deep watering.
