Bronze Rambler Grevillea Standard (Grevillea 'Bronze Rambler') is a groundcover grevillea grafted onto a clear trunk, so the foliage cascades from a head held at about 1.2m and spreads to roughly 2m wide. Deeply cut leaves flush bronze before hardening to green, and red toothbrush flowers appear through much of the year. It is a native weeping feature for a courtyard with no room for a tree.

Why you'll love it

  • A weeping native at eye level. Height is fixed by the graft, so the foliage sits where you see it and never outgrows the spot.
  • Honeyeaters find it quickly. Red toothbrush flowers carry nectar through most of the year.
  • Colour between flowerings. New growth breaks bronze against the older green foliage, so the head is never plain.
  • Hardy and fast. Frost hardy, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, content in poor soil, and quick once established.

Where it works best

Feature planting. One plant beside a path or an entry gives shape without blocking a view, since the trunk stays clear.

Pots and containers. A wide, heavy pot at least 500mm across lets the foliage spill over the rim. Weight matters, because the head catches wind.

Small gardens, balconies and courtyards. Where a shrub would eat the floor space, this carries the same foliage mass in the air.

Growing Bronze Rambler Grevillea in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering, in subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Frost hardy, so it handles southern winters in the ground, and salt tolerant enough for coastal gardens.

Soil. Free draining is essential. On clay, plant high on a mound with coarse sand and gravel worked in. Mulch with coarse bark or gravel, clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Deep water weekly through the first summer, then only in long dry spells. Feed lightly in early spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser: standard fertilisers and manures carry enough phosphorus to damage the roots.

Pruning. Trim the head lightly after each flush. The important job is the trunk: rub off any shoots below the graft as they appear, or the understock takes over and the weeping head is lost.

What to expect when it arrives

It comes in two sizes, a tube and a 45L. The 45L is the advanced option and the reason most people buy this plant, with a formed trunk and a head already cascading. The tube is young stock, a budget entry rather than a shortcut to the same look.

Plants are packed to travel upright and delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and minimum order $300 before delivery. Advanced and large stock is freighted at cost. Expect new growth within four to six weeks in the warm months, and a full flush of flower in the first season. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How tall will it get?

About 1.2m, set by the graft union rather than the plant's own growth. The head spreads to roughly 2m, so plan for width.

What fertiliser should I use?

A low phosphorus native fertiliser, sparingly, in early spring. Complete fertilisers, blood and bone and manures carry too much phosphorus and can burn the roots.

Can I grow it in a pot?

Yes. Use a wide, heavy container at least 500mm across with a free draining native mix, and water more often than one in the ground.
