Limelight Standard, the grafted form of the bower wattle (Acacia cognata 'Limelight'), carries that famous lime green weeping foliage on a clear stem, so the soft mop of leaves sits at eye level like a living sculpture. The whole plant finishes at about 1.8m tall and 1.5m wide, with the height fixed by the graft rather than the years. For a courtyard pot, an entry or a small garden, it is hard to beat among Australian natives.

Why you'll love it

  • Instant, permanent structure. The grafted standard gives you a defined shape on day one, and it never outgrows its spot the way a shrub can.
  • That lime green colour. The fine weeping foliage holds its fresh bright green all year and glows against dark walls, timber and grey pavers.
  • An Australian native with polish. All the softness of a designer foliage plant, bred from south eastern Australian stock.
  • Happy in a pot long term. Compact roots and a fixed height make it one of the most reliable natives for large containers.
  • Little upkeep. Grown for foliage with only sparse yellow blooms, so there is no flowering mess to clean up.

Where it works best

Feature planting. Use it solo where the weeping crown can be seen in full, underplanted with low groundcovers.

Pots, balconies and courtyards. A pot 500mm or wider balances the crown. One either side of a doorway is a classic pairing.

Entries, paths and driveways. The clear stem keeps foliage above knee height, so it lines a path or driveway without flopping over the edge.

Growing Limelight Standard in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to light shade in cool temperate, warm temperate, subtropical and Mediterranean gardens. It handles light frost only, so in cold inland or tableland districts give it a warm sheltered position out of frost hollows, or a pot you can move through winter.

Soil. Free draining soil is the one non negotiable. Wet feet will kill it faster than drought ever will, so mound the bed on clay and use a quality native mix in pots.

Water and feed. Water deeply once or twice a week through the first summer, then only through long dry spells; established plants are drought tolerant. Feed lightly in spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.

Pruning. Trim the crown lightly after the warm season flush to keep it dense and rounded, and remove any shoots on the trunk below the graft as soon as you see them.

What to expect when it arrives

We sell this standard in 140mm and 200mm pots as multi plant packs for repeat plantings along a path, as a single 300mm plant, and as an advanced 30L specimen with a thicker stem and fuller crown, sometimes on backorder between batches. Whatever the size, the stem height is already set and the crown builds width and density from there.

Standards are staked for transit and travel well. Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery. Advanced and large stock is freighted at cost. Allow a season for the crown to thicken noticeably. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

Will it grow taller than 1.8m?

Not meaningfully. The height is set by the graft, so the plant puts its energy into a wider, denser crown instead. That predictability is the main reason to buy a standard over a shrub form.

Does it flower?

Only sparsely. It produces small yellow wattle flowers, but this selection is grown for its weeping lime foliage, and the flowers pass mostly unnoticed.

How do I care for it in a pot?

Use free draining native mix, water when the top of the mix dries, and feed yearly with low phosphorus native fertiliser. Root prune or repot every three to four years.

How much frost can it take?

Light frost only. Hard freezes mark the foliage, so in cold districts position it near a warm wall or move potted plants under cover for winter.
