Growing Madagascar Cane Palm in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun produces the strongest trunks, though it accepts part shade while young. This is a plant for tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. It is frost tender, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and frosting southern gardens are not suitable.

Soil. It wants free draining ground. Work compost through the backfill, plant slightly high on heavy clay, and mulch 75mm deep kept clear of the canes.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first two summers, then reduce as it establishes. A controlled release palm fertiliser in early spring and mid summer holds the frond colour.

Pruning. Cut spent fronds off at the base once they brown, and never cut into the growing crown. Older canes can be removed at ground level to open the clump.
