Grevillea Pink Profusion

Grevillea 'Pink Profusion' (Grevillea 'Pink Profusion') is a rounded Australian native shrub that settles at about 1.8m tall and wide and carries pink flowers over a long season. Honeyeaters find it within weeks of planting. It is the shrub to reach for when the soil is poor, the position is hot and nothing else has held.

Screening and hedging. Plant 1.2m apart for an informal native screen. At that spacing the shrubs meet without crowding, and the screen stays soft edged rather than clipped.

Mass planting and borders. The same 1.2m spacing works for a run along a driveway or a bank. Grouped plants read better than single specimens and draw more bird traffic.

Feature planting. A single plant beside a path or in a native bed holds its shape and needs almost nothing once established.

Growing Grevillea 'Pink Profusion' in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering and the densest growth. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, Mediterranean and arid gardens. It takes light frost only, so hard frosting districts need a warm sheltered wall or a hardier native.

Soil. Free draining above all else. Sand and gravel are ideal, clay needs a raised mound with grit worked through. Do not add manure or high phosphorus fertiliser, which grevilleas cannot process. Mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the stem.

Water and feed. Deep soak weekly through the first summer, then only in long dry spells. A low phosphorus native fertiliser after the main flush is all it needs.

Pruning. Tip prune lightly from the day it goes in, then trim after each flowering flush. Never cut back into bare leafless wood, because grevilleas rarely reshoot from it. Regular light trimming is what keeps the base full.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it for a screen?

One point two metres apart in a single row. Closer planting crowds the bases, restricts airflow and does not close the screen any sooner.

How fast does it grow?

Fairly quick in a warm garden with sun and drainage, reaching close to full height in three to four years. Growth is slower in heavy soil and in cooler districts.

Why is my grevillea going yellow?

Usually phosphorus. Standard garden fertilisers and manures lock up iron in native roots and yellow the leaves. Switch to a low phosphorus native blend and hold back on the feeding.

Will it cope with frost?

Light frost only. Young plants are the most vulnerable, so in districts with regular hard frosts choose a hardier native shrub instead.
