Cordyline Compacta Coffee (Cordyline fruticosa 'Compacta Coffee') carries deep coffee toned foliage on a plant that stops at about 1.5m tall and 80cm wide. That restraint is the point: the plain species outgrows most beds, while this one holds its shape in a pot or border. Like every form of this species, it is toxic to cats and dogs.

Position and climate. Bright filtered light or morning sun gives the deepest colour, while harsh afternoon sun bleaches and scorches the leaves. Pruning. Almost none. Peel off spent lower leaves as they yellow, and if a stem becomes bare, cut it back to about 30cm in spring; it reshoots from the trunk.

How far apart should I plant it?

Space plants 50cm apart for mass planting or a border. At that spacing the foliage closes into an unbroken band without the clumps crowding each other.

Why is the leaf colour fading?

Usually light. Deep shade turns the foliage muddy green, while hot afternoon sun bleaches it. Morning sun with afternoon shelter holds the coffee tone best.

Can I grow it on a balcony?

Yes, and it is one of the better choices for one. Use a 40cm pot with quality potting mix, water more often than you would in the ground, and shift it out of any cold snap.
