Hebe

Hebes are neat evergreen shrubs from New Zealand that flower for months. Most form a rounded mound under a metre, with spikes of purple, blue, pink or white from late spring to autumn, and some again in winter. They suit low hedges, borders, coastal gardens and pots, and bees work the flowers all season. This range covers the Elegance series, named hybrids and small leaved species for clipping. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a hebe

Pick by flower colour and by leaf. The Elegance series gives four colours on the same compact 80cm to 1m plant, so they mix well in one border: Elegance Blue, Purple, Pink and Blush. Inspiration is a proven performer with rich purple spikes. Annie's Winter Wonder flowers in the cool months when the others rest, and Snowdrift and Icing Sugar carry white and soft pink. For foliage and form, Boxleaf Hebe (Hebe buxifolia) has tiny leaves that clip like box, and Emerald Green makes a tight 40cm cushion that needs no trimming.

Where hebes work

Hebes like a mild climate: coastal and temperate gardens from Sydney and Perth south suit them best, and they handle salt wind well. They grow in full sun or part shade and need drainage. In humid subtropical areas choose an open, breezy spot and avoid overhead watering. Use them as a low informal hedge, a border in front of taller shrubs, or in pots. They mix easily with our other flowering plants and suit coastal gardens.

Planting and spacing

For a low hedge or a filled border, plant 50cm to 60cm apart. As single shrubs give each one 80cm. Plant level with the soil, mulch, and water twice a week for the first month, then weekly through the first summer.

Care basics

Trim lightly after each flush of flowers, taking off the spent spikes and a little leaf. This keeps the shrub dense and brings on more flowers. Avoid cutting back into bare old wood. Feed in spring with a slow release fertiliser. Hebes are not long lived shrubs: expect to replace them after several years.

Common questions

When do hebes flower?

Most flower from late spring through autumn. Some, such as Annie's Winter Wonder, flower in winter as well.

Do hebes grow in shade?

They grow in part shade but flower best with at least half a day of sun.

How do I prune a hebe?

Trim off the finished flower spikes and shape the plant lightly after flowering. Do not cut into old leafless wood, because it may not reshoot.

Are hebes good for pots?

Yes. Their compact size and long flowering make them a good pot plant. Use a free draining mix and water regularly.
