How to choose a formal conifer

Start with the silhouette. For the classic Mediterranean column, plant Pencil Pine (Cupressus sempervirens 'Nitschke's Needles') or the blue toned Mediterranean Cypress, both reaching 6m to 9m while staying around a metre wide. Spartan Juniper is the quickest at 30cm to 45cm a year. The Italian cypresses manage around 30cm, and the Thuja selections a steadier 15cm to 25cm.

How much clipping do they need?

Less than almost any other formal planting. One light trim a year keeps them crisp, two for perfection.

Why is my conifer browning?
