Queen Victoria Agave

Queen Victoria Agave (Agave victoriae-reginae) is the collector's agave, a tight geometric rosette of deep green leaves painted with crisp white margins. It reaches only about 40cm tall and 60cm wide, and it gets there very slowly, which is why established plants are treasured. From the deserts of northern Mexico, it brings genuine sculpture to a pot, a rockery or a gravel garden and asks almost nothing in return.

Pots and containers. Its natural home in most Australian gardens. A wide, shallow pot in free draining mix shows the rosette like a piece on a plinth, on a balcony, a courtyard table or flanking a doorway.

Rockeries and gravel gardens. Planted among stone it looks exactly right, and the sharp drainage suits it perfectly.

Feature planting. Use a single specimen at eye level rather than lost in a bed. In coastal gardens it handles exposure and brings order to sandy ground.

Growing Queen Victoria Agave in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun, or the brightest spot a courtyard offers. It suits arid, Mediterranean, warm temperate and subtropical climates. It is frost hardy in dry winter districts; what it resents is cold that comes with months of rain, so in those areas grow it in a pot under an eave.

Soil. Gritty and free draining above all else. In pots use a cactus and succulent mix; in the ground, mound the bed and work in coarse sand or fine gravel.

Water and feed. Water deeply, then let the mix dry out completely, roughly every two to three weeks in summer and barely at all in winter. Feeding is optional: a half strength succulent feed in spring is plenty.

Pruning. None. Leaves are permanent parts of the rosette, so never trim tips or remove healthy foliage.

Common questions

How slow is slow?

Slow even by agave standards. Expect the rosette to add size almost imperceptibly from year to year, which is why a well grown 300mm plant is bought rather than raised.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Treat it with respect. Each leaf ends in a sharp spine and the sap can irritate skin, so position it out of walkways and away from play areas, ideally raised in a pot.

Will it flower?

Not for a very long time. Agaves bloom once at the end of a long life, sending up a tall spike of cream flowers, and the rosette declines after the effort. Buy it as permanent foliage sculpture.

Can it stay in the same pot permanently?

More or less. Growth is so slow that repotting is rarely needed; refresh the mix every few years and step up one pot size only when the rosette overhangs the rim.
