The SpecRite Merbau Tapered Garden Border Roll is a 2 metre length of select grade hardwood edging that unrolls along a bed to give a clean, defined line. It is the straightforward fix for a bed that bleeds mulch onto the lawn, or a path that has lost its edge.

What it does

  • Hardwood chosen for outdoor life. Merbau is dense timber suited to weather and ground contact, naturally resistant to fungi, termites and wood borers.
  • Select grade, kiln dried. Kiln drying keeps the boards stable and gives an even, finished look rather than a rough utility one.
  • Bends where you need it to. The roll follows gentle curves as well as straight runs, so one product handles a square vegetable bed and a curved border.
  • A job you can do yourself. The tapered border is positioned along the edge and secured into the ground as required, which is spade and mallet work.

How to use it

Mark the line, then cut a shallow trench with a spade so the border sits at the height you want relative to the lawn. Set the roll in, secure it into the ground as required, and backfill both sides, tamping the soil firm so the run cannot lean. On a curve, work in short sections.

Each roll is 2 metres long, so measure the total edge and count rolls before ordering: a 6 metre bed edge takes three. Left alone, merbau weathers to silver grey. To hold the red brown colour, coat it with a suitable timber oil after installation and reapply once the finish dulls.

Garden bed edging. A defined border keeps mulch in and turf runners out, and it gives planting beds a shape that reads as deliberate.

Paths and walkways. Separating gravel or lawn from a planted area stops the two migrating into each other.
