Brunnings Natural Bamboo Garden Stakes are hand picked, graded canes sold in packs of ten, in 150cm and 180cm lengths. They do the simple job of holding a plant upright: tomatoes and beans in the vegetable patch, tall flowers that flop after wind, and climbers that need something to run up.

What it does

  • Two lengths, ten stakes. 150cm suits most staked vegetables and flowers. 180cm gives climbers and tall tomatoes more working height once you allow for the length buried in the soil.
  • Natural bamboo. Strong for its weight, so a cane carries a heavy fruiting plant and still pushes in by hand.
  • Fumigated and graded. The canes are fumigated before packing, so they do not carry insects into your beds, and they are hand picked for consistent thickness and straightness.
  • Reusable. Pulled and stored dry at the end of the season, the same stakes come out again the following year.

How to use it

Push the stake firmly into the soil close to the base of the plant, ideally at planting time so you are not driving it down through an established root system later. Get enough length into the ground that the stake will not lean under load. The deeper it goes the shorter the working height above, which is the reason to choose 180cm for anything tall.

Tie the plant on with soft ties or twine in a loose figure of eight, so the stem is supported without being strangled as it thickens. For climbers, three or four stakes pushed in around the plant and tied together at the top make a simple wigwam. At the end of the season, pull them, clean the soil off and store them dry.

What it suits

Use. Vegetable gardens. Tomatoes, beans and peas all crop better held upright and off the ground.
