The Holman Professional Rain Gauge Cylinder measures rainfall at your own property, in 1mm increments, up to a total of 250mm. It is a manual gauge in UV stabilised plastic, 120mm wide and 360mm high, with an outer cylinder that catches the overflow when the measuring tube fills. For anyone deciding whether to water this week, a real number from your own garden beats a forecast written for the whole city.
Mount it in the open, away from trees, eaves, fences and buildings. Anything overhead or upwind of the funnel intercepts rain and every reading you take afterwards will be low. Use the supplied stainless steel screws and check the gauge sits level.
Read and empty it daily, or straight after heavy rain, and record the figure on the rainfall chart. If the inner tube has filled, pour the water from the outer cylinder into the measuring tube and add the readings together for the true total. Rinse the tube and the outer cylinder out periodically so leaf litter and grit do not skew the level.
