Golden Purslane (Portulaca oleracea sativa) is a fast growing leafy green with tender, succulent leaves and a mild, slightly lemony tang. It keeps producing through the heat and dry weather that flattens lettuce and other soft greens, and it regrows after every picking. Sold as a seed packet, it is a warm season crop for salad leaves through summer.

What it does

  • Nutritious leaves. The leaves and stems are edible fresh or cooked, and are rich in omega-3 fatty acids along with vitamins and minerals.
  • Handles heat and dry conditions. It grows through hot, dry weather where most leafy greens bolt or collapse, which makes it genuinely useful.
  • Cut and come again. Leaves can be picked within a few weeks of planting, and the plants keep regrowing after harvest.

How to use it

Sow in spring or summer, once the soil is warm. In warm climates seed can go in at any time of year, though spring and summer sowings run hardest. Sowing more thickly gives faster cover and a larger harvest. It needs neither mulch nor fertiliser to stay productive.
