Lebanese cucumber is the small, smooth skinned type most people actually eat: crisp, mild and thin skinned enough that it does not need peeling. This form of Cucumis sativus is fast and productive, carrying fruit across a long warm season rather than in one short burst. It is a sound crop for a first vegetable bed, and easy in a large pot.
Sow into open, free draining soil in a sunny position, spacing plants 40 to 50cm apart. Trained up a trellis you can plant towards the closer end of that range and fit more plants into the same run, which is the simplest way to lift the total crop.
In warm climates it can be planted at any time of year. Elsewhere, spring and summer are the reliable windows. In healthy soil this variety grows strongly without extra mulching or fertiliser. Water consistently rather than heavily, and take the fruit as it sizes up: a cucumber left to go fat and yellow tells the plant to stop flowering.
Use in vegetable and raised beds. Open beds with good drainage suit it best, and a raised bed keeps the vines contained and the fruit clean.
Use on a trellis or in a large pot. It performs well in containers given something to climb, so a sunny balcony works.
Not a shade or cool season crop. Fruit set slows badly without sun and warmth, so hold the seed until conditions turn. Seed is delivered Australia wide, and packets take up no room in a delivery, so they are an easy addition to a larger plant order.
