The Atlantis Kos Jar is the tallest shape in the Atlantis range, a hand-made Vietnamese ceramic jar in two sizes: 49 x 105cm holding 210L, and 64 x 125cm holding 270L. Both are double-fired for frost resistance and finished in a heavily textured aged glaze that varies from piece to piece. At over a metre tall, this is a jar bought as a piece of garden architecture, planted or standing empty.
Why you'll love it
-
Height without a plant. At 105cm and 125cm tall the jar holds a corner on its own, useful where a plant would struggle for light or root room.
-
An aged glaze that weathers like a relic. The texture reads as excavated rather than new, and no two jars are alike.
-
Double-fired for frost resistance. The second firing tightens the clay body, so it can stand out through a cold winter.
-
Serious soil volume. 210L and 270L is more root run than most garden pots offer, so a planted jar carries a substantial specimen.
Sizes and what fits in them
Both measurements are outside, width by height.
-
49 x 105cm, 210L, 85kg. Tall and slim. Works as a standalone feature beside a doorway or at the end of a path, or planted with a single upright specimen.
-
64 x 125cm, 270L, 130kg. The full statement size, taller than most garden walls, best given clear space and a plain background so the profile reads.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Hand-made ceramic from Vietnam, double-fired and glazed by hand, so colour depth and texture differ between pieces.
Outdoors. Double firing gives the frost resistance, and the aged glaze mellows outside rather than staying uniform. Set the jar on level, firm ground: a tall vessel on soft soil will lean over time.
Drainage. It has drainage holes and they must be kept clear, with the jar raised on feet so water escapes freely. Cover the holes with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add a 50mm layer of 10mm gravel, then a quality premium potting mix, never garden soil.
What to expect when it arrives
Jars ship empty and unplanted, packed to travel upright, and are dispatched in 2 to 5 business days. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Plan the handling before it lands: the 64 x 125cm jar is 130kg bare ceramic, so you want firm access, a trolley and more than one person, and it should be positioned before any mix goes in.
