The Garden Family Sugar Cane Mulch is a light organic mulch made from 100% sugar cane leaf, sold in a bale that covers up to 22 square metres. Spread over a bed it slows evaporation, keeps weed seed in the dark and then breaks down into the soil. It is dust extracted, so it is clean to handle.

What it does

  • Holds water where the roots are. The Garden Family rates it as improving water penetration and retention by up to 75%, which shows up first in the beds you would otherwise water twice a week.
  • Shades out weed seed. Applied at the right depth it blocks the light germinating seed needs, so fewer weeds get away.
  • Feeds the bed as it goes. Sugar cane breaks down slowly, adding organic matter and nutrients, and improving soil structure and fertility as it goes.
  • Buffers the extremes. A mulched surface swings less in temperature than bare soil, which matters through a hot spell.

How to use it

Weed the bed and water it first, because mulch laid over dry soil keeps it dry. Spread the cane evenly to a depth of 50mm to 70mm and rake it level; one bale covers up to 22 square metres, and coverage drops as the depth increases. Keep the layer back off stems and trunks, where packed mulch holds moisture and invites rot. Water it in to settle the layer, then top up whenever bare soil starts showing through.

Vegetable and flower beds. Annual planting is where a soft mulch earns its keep, because it is easy to pull back at sowing time and to close up once seedlings are away.
