Richgro Natural Gypsum Clay Breaker is a 15kg bag of naturally mined gypsum used to open up heavy clay soil in garden beds and lawns. It helps clay particles bind into workable crumbs instead of a solid mass, so water moves through the profile and roots can follow it. It is the first thing to reach for where soil sets hard and puddles after rain.

What it does

  • Improves clay structure. Gypsum encourages fine clay particles to clump together into larger aggregates.
  • Lets water in. Better aggregation means better infiltration, so rain and irrigation soak down rather than pooling on the surface.
  • Supplies calcium. Calcium is the active part of the product, supporting root development and helping roots take up the nutrients already in the soil.
  • Nothing added. It is mined from natural sources with no added chemicals.

How to use it

Spread it evenly over the soil surface and water it in well. Water is what activates gypsum, so a dry application sitting on top of dry clay does nothing until the next decent rain.

For a new bed, apply it during preparation and dig or fork it through the top of the profile before planting. On established lawns and beds, apply to the surface and let watering carry it down. Application rates are printed on the bag, so work to those rather than guessing. As a naturally mined product it varies a little in moisture and appearance from bag to bag.

Clay beds before planting. Heavy clay garden beds before planting, and compacted areas where drainage is poor and the ground stays wet long after everyone else has dried out.

Lawns, new and established. Lawns on clay, where it improves the way water and nutrients reach the root zone.
