Rigid Fan Palm

Rigid Fan Palm (Livistona rigida) is the gorge palm of inland northern Australia, found along permanent waterholes in the Northern Territory and Queensland. In a garden it makes a single clean trunk to about 10m with a stiff crown of large fan shaped fronds roughly 4m across. It handles heat, drought and seasonal flooding, which is a combination almost no other feature palm offers.

Growing Rigid Fan Palm in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun once established, with light shade appreciated in the first two years. It suits tropical, subtropical, arid and warm temperate gardens, which covers Darwin through to Perth, Brisbane and inland centres. It takes light frost only, so hard frosting southern and tableland gardens are outside its range.

Soil. Adaptable. Sandy, loamy or heavy soil all work, and it tolerates ground that stays wet, though richer soil gives faster growth.

Water and feed. Water generously through the first two summers, because growth rate is driven almost entirely by water. Apply a controlled release palm fertiliser in early spring and again in midsummer to keep the crown deep green.

Pruning. Remove fronds only once they have browned off completely. Cutting green fronds to tidy the crown slows the plant and can leave a narrow, weakened trunk section.

How fast does it grow?

Slowly. Expect steady frond production and gradual trunk development rather than quick height, particularly in the first few years. Consistent water and summer feeding make the biggest difference.

Can it handle frost?

Light frost only. Coastal and inland gardens with the occasional light frost are fine, but repeated hard frosts will damage the crown, so cold southern districts should choose another palm.

How much space does it need?

Allow about 4m of clear width for the crown and keep it 3m or more from walls and eaves, since the fronds are stiff and do not bend around obstacles.
