PRUMNOPITYS ladei (Mt. Spurgeon Black Pine)

Mt Spurgeon Black Pine (Prumnopitys ladei) is one of the rarest conifers in the country, known in the wild from only a handful of mountain sites in far north Queensland. In cultivation it is very slow, settling at around 8m tall and 4m wide over many years rather than the 30m it reaches in rainforest. Soft dark green foliage on a neat upright frame makes it a collector's tree that still works as a garden plant.

Growing Mt Spurgeon Black Pine in Australia

Position and climate. Tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens suit it. Full sun is fine once established, though young trees appreciate afternoon shade. It takes light frost only, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and hard frosting southern gardens are outside its range.

Soil. Deep, well drained soil enriched with compost, reflecting the rainforest ground it comes from. It will not sit in waterlogged clay, so raise the planting position if drainage is poor, and mulch 75mm deep clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two years, easing back only once growth resumes. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring is enough. Avoid heavy phosphorus doses, and never let it dry out completely.

Pruning. Effectively none. Remove damaged wood if it appears and leave the natural shape alone, since the tree grows too slowly to recover quickly from hard cutting.
